Puntarenas is not much of a surf town, though there is a really dirty wave that breaks along the sandspit formed at the northern tip of town, on a large swell.
Puntarenas is more of a stop over if you are taking the ferry or a bus connecting the Central Pacific Region of Costa Rica to the southern Nicoya Peninsula, including Montezuma, Mal Pais and Santa Teresa.
The best waves near Puntarenas can be found just south in the town of Barranca, at the mouth of the Rio Barranca, or Boca Barranca.
There a several small hotels, cabinas and vacation rentals to choose from in and around Puntarenas, Costa Rica.
