The town of Tamarindo, Costa Rica was once a sleepy fishing village that has grown massively over the past ten years with at least five high rise condo developments over seven story tall buildings dotting the landscape.
Tamarindo is a popular tourist destination for surfers of all ability levels to use as a base to explore the surrounding area.
Tamarindo is located between Punta San Francisco, the Langosta Estuary and the Tamarindo Estuary. The estuary “El Estero” gets good from time to time, but like all the other breaks in the area, it takes a bit of swell to turn on.
Across the Tamarindo Estuary is the surf break, “La Casitas”, which is consistently bigger than most other breaks because it is out to the shadow of Punta San Francisco and Isla Capitan, which has a wave that breaks around the island on large swells.
Playa Tamarindo has several breaks, which tend to work best on west swells and big south swells. The best wave is Pico Pequeno, a right reef break that barrels off a finger reef that juts out in front the Diria Hotel, a beach front hotel development in Tamarindo.
There are many surf shops and surf schools where you can rent a board or take a surfing lessons with hundreds of other tourist. The waves are usually crowded in Tamarindo.
